Visitors can arrange among a great variety of our travel packages not only of Machu Picchu but the most important tourist destinations of Peru. Those interested in trekking the Inca Trail to the Sanctuary of Machu Picchu through the Urubamba Valley should organize their treks with serious and responsible travel agencies or tour operators, Tour in Peru.com is a great of option, in an effort to minimize the damage being caused to the ecology and the same Sanctuary of Machu Picchu. There are currently restrictions on some sections of the Inca Trail. http://ping.fm/X04HE
Visit Machu Picchu, the Inca Sanctuary or go on the Inca Trail. For most visitors, the Inca city of Machu Picchu is the highlight of their visit. The Historic Sanctuary of Machu Picchu was revealed to the Western world by the American Hiram Bingham on July 24 1911, and was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1983. The Lost City of the Incas, Machu Picchu is probably the most important archaeological site in South America and requires at least one day to fully explore it. http://ping.fm/u0UFG

The Sectors and Constructions of Machu Picchu. The citadel of Machu Picchu is divided into two sectors: the agricultural (terracing) and the urban, where there are main squares, temples, palaces, storehouses, workshops, stairways, cables and water fountains which run through both sectors, which measure 20 and 10 hectares respectively. It is clear that the architectural design was based on Cuzco, the Capital of the Inca Empire. Machu Picchu was built according to its natural surroundings, with its constructions following the natural curves and dips and rises in the land. The archaeological excavation that took place after Bingham discovered the ruins showed the land was previously given granite foundations with little surrounding soil. The agricultural and urban sectors of Machu Picchu are split by a dry ditch, the result of a geographic fault line. The following describe the most important constructions in both sectors. http://ping.fm/RXDOR

Don’t take the weather or climate differences in Machu Picchu between the dry and rainy seasons too seriously, that is, as if one was the season with good weather and the other the one with bad weather. You could well get more pleasure in the citadel of Machu Picchu during the wet season, with less tourists around and a more mystic atmosphere. http://ping.fm/Hdc8c
The Weather in the misterious Sanctuary of Machu Picchu. Machu Picchu lies just above the cloud forest of the Andes’ eastern mountains, at 2,350 m.a.s.l. There are two main kinds of weather such as the dry and the rainy seasons in the Sanctuary of Machu Picchu, yet the average temperatures in Machu Picchu are quite mild, rarely rising above 30°C (86ºF) nor dropping below 11°C. http://ping.fm/SowMx
Machu Picchu Climate. Machu Picchu is located in a subtropical zone, or dense wood, the reason why the climate is mild, warm and damp, with an average year-round temperature of 13°C during the day. In Machu Picchu you can perceive two distinct seasons during the year: the rainy season from November to March, which is a time of heavy rains. Visitors to the Sanctuary of Machu Picchu are advised to dress accordingly during this season. The dry season in Machu Picchu from April to October brings on higher temperatures. This season is also preferred by travelers planning to visit the Lost City of the Incas, Machu Picchu. http://ping.fm/dtXRm
Machu Picchu Climate and Location. Machu Picchu Location. The Machu Picchu archaeological complex is located in the department of Cuzco, in the Urubamba province and district of Machu Picchu. It is perched on the eastern slopes of the Vilcanota mountain range, a chain of mountains curtailed by the Apurimac and Urubamba Rivers (great white water rafting). At latitude 13º7′ South and longitude 72º34′ West of the Greenwich Meridian, Machu Picchu is located at a height of 2,350 meters (7,710 feet) above sea level (main square). http://ping.fm/lA15e

How would they keep the secret of Machu Picchu? It’s hard to understand from our knowledge of Greek, Egyptian and other early civilizations with written records how such a magnificent site (Machu Picchu) could not have been discovered by the Spanish. Yet until its discovery in the 1911, Machu Picchu, “the lost city of the Incas”, remained forgotten for 400 years. http://ping.fm/HZ28V
The Inca succumbed to Spanish conquest in the 16th century; and the explorer Hiram Bingham III, whose long life lasted almost as many years as the Inca Empire, died in 1956. Like the stones of Machu Picchu, however, the voices of the Inca ruler and the American explorer continue to resonate. They seem alive! http://ping.fm/d5H7q
The Stones of Machu Picchu seem alive. The stones at Machu Picchu seem almost alive. They (the stones of Machu Picchu) may be alive, if you credit the religious beliefs of the ruler Pachacuti Yupanqui, whose subjects in the early 15th century constructed the granite Inca complex of Machu Picchu, high above a curling river and nestled among jagged green peaks. http://ping.fm/nyVDT

A few years ago, the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu was becoming the Long Island Expressway of central Peru, brimming with trash, tourists and growing concerns about overuse. So the Peruvian government began enforcing strict limits on the number of people allowed on the trail to the Lost City of Machu Picchu. Right now, only 500 people a day may enter — about 200 tourists and 300 guides and porters. http://ping.fm/B93Dr
Alternative Inca Trails are gaining popularity with travelers unable or unwilling to book a slot three to six months in advance. These treks can be booked a day or two in advance and can cost less than half as much as a hike on the Inca Trail. http://ping.fm/oUk01
I fail to understand the rationale for Yale to have any historical claim to the artifacts belonging to Machu Picchu. Bingham had no authority to transfer ownership to begin with. The agreement reflects a colonial way of thinking not expected from a modern academic institution. In fact, Yale has gone a step further than it did in its negotiations with President Toledo; the university is now brazenly asking to keep a significant part of the collection of Machu Picchu for research for an additional 99 years. http://ping.fm/ANbCu
Negotiations with Yale over the artifacts of Machu Picchu Peru. By Eliane Karp-Toledo – Stanford, Calif. - February 23, 2008
SURE, it seemed like a great idea when, last September, President Alan García of Peru reached a preliminary agreement with Yale about the disposition of more than 350 artifacts taken from Machu Picchu. Everyone hoped the settlement might be a break for cultural understanding in the cloudy skies of international cooperation. News reports suggested that Yale would return more than 350 museum-quality artifacts which belong to Machu Picchu, plus several thousand fragments thought to be of interest mainly to researchers — all of which were taken from the mountaintop Inca archaeological complex of the Sanctuary of Machu Picchu nearly a century ago — and that legal title to all the artifacts, even those to be left at Yale for research, would be held by Peru. http://ping.fm/9T6Kp

Regarding threatened wildlife, those mammals considered vulnerable in Machu Picchu Sanctuary include Cebus albifrons, Cebus apella, Tremarctos ornatus, Hippocamelus antisensis; vulnerable birds: Merganetta armara, Vultur gryphus, Falco peregrinus, Fulica gigantea; rare mammals: Procyon cancrivorus, Felis jacobita, Mazama chunyi, Pudu mephistophiles (outside Machu Picchu Sanctuary’s limits), Dasyprocta kalinowskii; rare birds: Leptasthenura xenothorax, Ampelion stresemanni, Agriornis andicola. An “undetermined” mammal species in the Sanctuary of Machu Picchu is the Felix pardalis; a bird species: Nothoprocta tacsanowskii; and an amphibian: Gastrotec Ochoai. http://ping.fm/Yovc0
A great biodiversity of fauna in Machu Picchu. Establishment of Machu Picchu Sanctuary as a protected area, specifically as a Historic Sanctuary, has had positive benefits since its inauguration in 1981. Despite some serious environmental conflicts, the Sanctuary o Machu Picchu has helped wildlife in some sectors. Sightings of animals like the spectacled bear (Tremarctos ornatus) and neotropical river otter (Lontra longicaudis) along the highway (at km markers 107 and 112, respectively) are proof of this great biodiversity. http://ping.fm/WKHKW
According to Holdridge’s life zone classification, which uses climate and vegetation to make its determinations, the Sanctuary of Machu Picchu includes nine life zones distributed at various altitudes from 1,850 to 6,270 m. http://ping.fm/gPPNL
Machu Picchu life zones – Biodiversity and Ecosystems. Machu Picchu Historic Sanctuary has greater biological diversity than neighboring ecosystems. In the Aobamba River watershed (the lower, western part of the Sanctuary of Machu Picchu) are the “jungle brows,” or upper limit of tropical vegetation in this part of the Andes. These “brows” contain great flora and fauna biodiversity, and combined with the mountainous ecosystems found within the Sanctuary, make Machu Picchu a special place full of biodiversity. The Historic Sanctuary of Machu Picchu also has a great number of native species, genetic banks, and ecosystems, and is therefore a conservation priority. http://ping.fm/iNAAP

A great biodiversity of flora in Machu Picchu. Wild flora of the region of Machu Picchu is particularly diverse because there is vegetation from nine distinct life zones, including typical Andean forest species like Polylepis sp. in the higher altitudes and epiphytes, shrubs, and palms typical of lower-altitude montane forests. The principal taxonomic groups in Machu Picchu include pteridophytes (ferns), gymnosperms, monocotyledons, dicotyledons, cryptogams, orchids, Poaceae, trees, moraceae, symplocaceae, roses (rosaceae), ericaceae, and vascular and non-vascular species. http://ping.fm/RTavH

Machu Picchu is on the List of World Heritage of UNESCO since 1983 as part of a whole cultural and eco-known Historic Sanctuary. Machu Picchu has been given lots of deserved titles and awards. The most recent award was given on July 7, 2007 when Machu Picchu was elected one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World; a private initiative of New Open World Corporation (NOWC), established by Swiss Bernard Weber, did not need the endorsement of any institution or government to continue its electoral purposes to select The New Seven Wonders of the Modern World which drew the attention of about one hundred million voters all around the World. http://ping.fm/CMLau
Machu Picchu one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World. One of the Seven Wonders of the World, Machu Picchu, is considered is well-considered a masterpiece of architecture and engineering. Machu Picchu’s unique architectural features and landscaping, and the veil of mystery that has woven around the Sanctuary and most of the literature published on the great variety of sites, have made of Machu Picchu one of the most popular tourist destinations of the world. http://ping.fm/xbjYm

The ecology of the Sanctuary of Machu Picchu is extremely diverse and complex, since this biodiversity includes ten wildlife zones, from the low, dry mountain forest – by the side of the valley – to the level of the mountain range summits. In terms of altitude, this means that it reaches from 1,725 m. at the level of the Urubamba River, up to 6,271 m. at snowy Salcantay’s summit. As a consequence, these geographical variations, and the singular topography, originate a really wide range of flora and wild fauna (a great biodiversity). http://ping.fm/FL6GC
The sanctuary of Machu Picchu, properly speaking, is a citadel made up of palaces and temples, dwellings and storehouses; but above all, Machu Picchu is made up of buildings which clearly fulfill ceremonial religious functions, the more luxurious and spectacular components of which are the mausoleums carved in the rock. http://ping.fm/sUOdl
Description of Machu Picchu. The following is a brief description of the sanctuary of Machu Picchu which is divided into two large sectors – one is the urban sector of the citadel and the other is the agricultural area which surrounds Machu Picchu. We could also consider the peak Wayna Picchu as a third sector. http://ping.fm/nbLbq
General description of the historic Sanctuary of Machu Picchu
The historic Sanctuary of Machu Picchu bears, with Cuzco and the other archaeological sites of the valley of the Urubamba (Ollantautaybo, Runcuracay, Sayacmarca, Phuyupamarca, Huiñay Huayna, Intipucu, etc.) a unique testimony to the Inca civilization. Cuzco and the old villages still retain traces of land occupation from the Inca Empire to preserve, in a more global manner, an archaeological heritage which has become susceptible to the effects of urbanization. Furthermore, Machu Picchu is an outstanding example of man’s interaction with his natural environment. http://ping.fm/d0x9G

Brief Description of Machu Picchu Historic Sanctuary. Machu Picchu stands 2,430 m above sea-level, in the middle of a tropical mountain forest, in an extraordinarily beautiful setting. The Historic Sanctuary of Machu Picchu was probably the most amazing urban creation of the Inca Empire at its height; its giant walls, terraces and ramps seem as if they have been cut naturally in the continuous rock escarpments. The natural setting of Machu Picchu, on the eastern slopes of the Andes, encompasses the upper Amazon basin with its rich diversity of flora and fauna. http://ping.fm/g1EdX

The agreement to return the artefacts of Machu Picchu comes after a concerted media campaign by Peruvian President Alan Garcia and his government. Marches fronted by ministers and the Peruvian president himself were staged in Lima and Cuzco. Mr Garcia, president of Peru, even appealed directly to his US counterpart, Barack Obama, to intervene. Earlier this month, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York returned to Egypt 19 artefacts found in the tomb of King Tutankhamun. http://ping.fm/EuxG5
Yale University has promised to return thousands of archaeological pieces taken from Machu Picchu nearly a century ago, Peru’s president has said. The relics from the 15th Century Inca citadel of Machu Picchu have been the focus of a bitter dispute lasting more than seven years. Peru says the artefacts were lent to Yale in 1911 but never returned. It filed a lawsuit against the university in 2008. http://ping.fm/sMSwB

They say the site, Peru’s new Machu Picchu, which was already known to local people, may provide an unparalleled record of Inca civilisation, as the area was hardly touched by conquistadors when in Peru. The ruins, about 40 kilometres (25 miles) from the Inca citadel of Machu Picchu in Peru, are in an area where an Inca army held out against the 16th Century invaders.. http://ping.fm/gWhNr

Peru’s new Machu Picchu Inca Lost City Corihuayrachina. Peru’s new Machu Picchu – The lost city is high in the Andes. Peruvian and British explorers say they have discovered a lost Inca city on a peak in the Andes of Peru that was used as a place of resistance against Spanish conquerors. “This site, Peru’s new Machu Picchu, may ultimately yield a record of Inca civilisation from the very beginning to the very end, undisturbed by European contact – an unparalleled opportunity.” http://ping.fm/Q1pNU
